First Ramzan Fast: A Sunday Filled with New Experiences and Faith

March 2, 2025 - Sunday, First Fast of Ramzan

Today was the first day of fasting for this Ramzan, and it was also a Sunday. I had set an alarm for 2:30 AM, hoping to wake up on time for Sehri. When the alarm rang, I quickly woke up, took a hot shower, and got ready for Sehri. Sehri was supposed to begin at 3:15 AM, but I left my room at 3:30 AM, a little worried that I wouldn’t make it in time.

The masjid, which is about 1.5 km away from my room, was my destination. I didn’t have a vehicle, so I had to walk. As I made my way down the streets of Bangalore, I noticed how quiet it was. A few vehicles passed by, but it wasn’t too busy. I saw several dogs along the way, and every dog seemed to be barking and staring at me, which made me feel a bit anxious. I kept walking with confidence, holding some stones in case the dogs became aggressive. I believed that Allah would keep me safe, and with that faith, I made it to the masjid.

When I arrived, I saw a small line, but it was much longer than I expected. The queue stretched from the ground floor, inside the masjid, and up the stairs to the third floor. I joined the queue, and after about 10-15 minutes, I reached the first floor. Just then, an announcement was made: "Close the doors, as Sehri time has ended." I was terrified that after all the obstacles I had faced, I might not get food. But I trusted in Allah’s mercy, hoping that those of us still on the stairs would still be served.

Alhamdulillah, when it was finally my turn, they gave us water first, followed by plates. Then, we were served achar (pickle), rice, and dal. I found a spot to sit, ate my Sehri, and felt incredibly grateful. Afterward, I stayed for Fajr prayer and met the kind person who had given me a lift yesterday. He offered me a ride back to my PG on his scooter, and I accepted, grateful for his help.

Once back at my PG, I relaxed for 10-15 minutes, then decided to take a nap since it was a Sunday. I had stayed up late last night and woke up early, so I needed rest. I set my phone to flight mode and fell asleep, waking up at 11 AM feeling refreshed.

After waking up, I realized I had wasted a bit of time scrolling through social media. I quickly got to work on my resume and started preparing to post my portfolio and register a domain name for my personal website. Time passed quickly, and soon it was time for Zohar prayer. I decided to head to the masjid after finishing my tasks so I could stay there for Iftar and pray Maghrib.

I reached the masjid and performed my Zohar prayer. I lay down for a while, reflecting on things, until it was time for Asr prayer. After Asr, I walked around the streets for a few minutes before returning to the masjid for Iftar.

As I went upstairs to where the Iftar arrangements were set up, I was handed a glass of water and served Ruh Afza (a traditional drink). They also gave me two almonds, which I ate while waiting. The dining area was busy with people, and the organizers were serving snacks like samosas and other treats. When it was finally time to break my fast, I started with a date, followed by a piece of banana. However, as I ate, the banana slipped out of my hand, and I spilled a few drops of my Ruh Afza.

Despite the mishap, I continued with the samosas and almonds, followed by a drink of Maza. Afterward, I went to wash my hands and was offered another glass of Ruh Afza. Alhamdulillah, I drank it and went to offer Maghrib prayer.

Once the Maghrib prayer was completed, I walked outside the masjid and noticed a grocery store nearby. I bought a packet of dates before heading to a restaurant. I sat down, hoping someone would come to take my order, but I quickly realized it was a self-service restaurant. I ordered an egg biryani, but to my disappointment, it didn’t live up to expectations. It was just plain rice with a few pieces of egg and some chili sprinkled on top. Not exactly what I expected when I ordered biryani. I mixed the rice with the gravy they provided, making it more palatable, but I didn’t enjoy the meal.

I decided to save one of the eggs for Sehri later and put it in my pouch with some dates. After finishing my meal, I washed my hands and started heading back to my PG. Even though I had a craving for a cold drink, I refrained from getting one because I didn’t want it to disturb my sleep.

When I reached my PG, I received a few missed calls. After calling them back, I spent a little time scrolling through social media. By 9:30 PM, I knew it was time to prepare for the next Sehri. I packed my dinner in a tiffin box so I could eat it in the morning and made my bed.

Now, as I finish writing this blog, I reflect on the day's experiences: a mix of faith, challenges, and small victories. I’m hopeful for the days ahead of this blessed month, insha’Allah.

Conclusion: A Fulfilling Day of Faith, Reflection, and New Beginnings

This first Ramzan fast has been filled with a lot of learning, both about my faith and about myself. From the challenge of walking 1.5 km to the masjid for Sehri to the experience of having Iftar with fellow Muslims, it’s been a day full of spiritual growth and community. Though there were some difficulties, I am grateful for everything Allah has provided.

As I move forward with my fasts this Ramzan, I look forward to the strength and faith this month brings.
